Water security in urban and peri-urban areas is a problem that affects many African cities. Conventional planning and management models have shown limitations in terms of financial return, technical performance, social equity and environmental sustainability.
Hence the need to use other planning strategies such as Integrated Urban Water Management (IUWM), whose goal is to develop and manage the urban water system in a holistic manner (i.e. including water supply, sanitation, wastewater, stormwater and solid waste management) taking into account the technical, social, economic and environmental issues ensuring water security and sustainability.
