With the objective to ensure food security and as part of the five-year growth and transformation plan (2010-2015), the Ethiopian government got involved in the development of massive irrigation projects for sugar production in different parts of the country. One of these schemes is Wolkayite Dam and Irrigation Project, for which the Government will use the runoff of the Zarema River, a major tributary of Tekeze river basin.
